After six years I found that I hated Kakuma more than anywhere else because of how people thought about us. The word "refugee" was very strong on the Kenyans' tongues. It meant "useless" to them. When things were difficult and we complained, they said, "Don't forget that you are a refugee. This is Kenya. Why did you leave your country?" This made me and the other refugees want to leave.
I had thought people always felt sorry for miserable homeless people, but the Kenyan officers felt proud when they saw us being homeless in their country. In the meantime they were depending on us, using refugee items and food for themselves. There was a saying in Kenya, "if a refugee is in your country and you do not get rich, you will never, ever get rich in your lifetime."

My favorite song was the one below. To sing it, the teacher stood in front of the children who were organized into groups representing continents or countries. The teacher began the song by asking the question. "Who are you?" One group of children would answer, "We are the Africans." "And you?" "We are the Asians." "And you?" "We are the Americans." "And you?" "We are the Australians." "And you?" "We are the Europeans." "And you?" "We are the Arabians." "Forget those names. We are all the children of God."
