На страницах этой книги мы окажемся в Дании времен Второй Мировой войны. Нас пригласит к себе семейство Йохансен. Главные героини – Аннемари (старшая дочь семества Йохансен) и ее лучшая подруга Эллен. Эллен из еврейской семьи. Казалось, что весь город уже привык к присутствию солдат на улицах, но приходят страшные известия. Всех евреев хотят увезти, вот только куда?...

Семья Аннемари начинает настоящую операцию. Мы узнаем очень много подробностей о труде датского Сопротивления, о тех хитростях, к которым они прибегали. В этой истории всем приходится быть сильными и храбрыми. Не бояться, а главное – всегда помнить о тех, кого мы любим. Пусть они и не рядом с нами.

Обязательно прочтите послесловие Лоис Лоури. Всегда интересно узнать, какая реальная история стоит за таким сложным, трогательным и нужным каждому текстом. Не бойтесь этой истории.

Annemarie looked up, panting, just as she reached the corner. Her laughter stopped. Her heart seemed to skip a beat.
"Halte!" the soldier ordered in a stern voice.
The German word was as familiar as it was frightening. Annemarie had heard it often enough before, but it had never been directed at her until now.
Behind her, Ellen also slowed and stopped. Far back, little Kirsti was plodding along, her face in a pout because the girls hadn't waited for her.
Annemarie stared up. There were two of them. That meant two helmets, two sets of cold eyes glaring at her, and four tall shiny boots planted firmly on the sidewalk, blocking her path to home.
And it meant two rifles, gripped in the hands of the soldiers. She stared at the rifles first. Then, finally, she looked into the face of the soldier who had ordered her to halt.
"Why are you running?" the harsh voice asked. His Danish was very poor. Three years, Annemarie thought with contempt. Three years they've been in our country, and still they can't speak our language.

"How brave are you, little Annemarie?" he asked suddenly.
She was startled. And dismayed. It was a question she did not want to be asked. When she asked it of herself, she didn't like her own answer.
"Not very," she confessed, looking at the floor of the barn.
Tall Uncle Henrik knelt before her so that his face was level with hers. Behind him, Blossom lowered her head, grasped a mouthful of hay in her mouth, and drew it in with her tongue. The kitten cocked its head, waiting, still hoping for spilled milk.
"I think that is not true," Uncle Henrik said. "I think you are like your mama, and like your papa, and like me. Frightened, but determined, and if the time came to be brave, I am quite sure you would be very, very brave.
"But," he added, "it is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. And so your mama does not know everything. Neither do I. We know only what we need to know.
