From the Teeth of Angels

The trouble with people is, no matter how well they think they know themselves, they never really do because they have no idea what other people are thinking of them.

“Are you the Devil?”
“Nope. He doesn’t exist. Just Life and Death. It’s so simple, no one’s ever wanted to believe it.”

What’s surviving if you don’t understand anything? Better to know something about it. Isn’t that what religion teaches? Christ was at peace and so were Muhammed and Buddha, the saints… That peace can come only from understanding, not from living another ten years. ... Whether it’s now or later, I would love to learn enough so that when I saw Death coming, my only reaction would be to say, ‘Okay.’

They say they’re telling people the news, but usually it’s cleaned up and defanged, no matter how gritty it looks. People say they want to know the truth, and think they’re interested in seeing death and bodies, but show the reality, and they’re horrified.

Everything is unnatural over the phone, no matter how close the friend or how long the conversation.

“How I live till I die… is that my choice? Is there free will?”
“Absolutely. We have no say in that. It’s your cruise. We’re only the last port.”
