Я по-прежнему читаю саму Библию и ношу ее с собой повсюду. Продавец в книжном был прав: лучше бы я купил вариант, замаскированный под журнал для подростков. Читая в метро, я чувствую враждебность, исходящую от пассажиров. Они смотрят на меня напряженно, поджав губы – будто я в любой момент могу наброситься и насильно их крестить.

Посмотрите, какой пример подает нам Бог. Библейский Бог относится к своим детям – человеческой расе – милосердно и справедливо. Прямо сейчас я на десять процентов справедлив и на девяносто – милосерден. И это неправильно. Если бы я отвечал за Эдем, Адам и Ева получили бы три предупреждения, потом четвертое, строгий выговор, и, наконец, я бы установил им отбой на двадцать минут раньше. Бог, как вы знаете, выставил их из сада. В знак сострадания перед изгнанием Он одел их в шкуры животных, но тем не менее выставил.

The other is so busy, he can squeeze in only a five-minute prayer session between phone calls. He recites his prayers superfast in a supply closet.Who has done the better thing?
"The first," I say.

My only other brush with tefillin was a book I was sent a few years ago at Esquire. It was by Leonard Nimoy - Star Trek's Spock himself - who, as it turns out, is also a photographer and a quasireligious Jew. His book contained racy black-and-white photography of half-nude women wrapped in tefillin, a sort of Mapplethorpe-meets-Talmud motif. (Brief but relevant side note: You know Spock's famous split-fingered "Live long and prosper" salute? It's actually a sacred hand position used by the Jewish priestly class, the kohanim.)

As writer Judith Shulevitz puts it in Slate magazine: "You cannot compare the Talmud to, say, the United States civil code, a series of prescriptions issued from Congress, or to Catholic doctrine, which comes directly from the pope. The Talmud is more like the minutes of religious study sessions, except that the hundreds of scholars involved in these sessions were enrolled in a seminar that went on for more than a millennium and touched on every conceivable aspect of life and ritual."

Religion - especially ritual-heavy religions like Judaism and HighChurch Christianity - have three key OCD traits. First, the repetition (every day the same prayers, every week the same candle-lightings). Second, the fascination with taxonomy - everything in its proper category: good or evil, holy or profane. And third, especially in Judaism, the fixation on purity and impurity.

I think there's something to the idea that the divine dwells more easily in text than in images. Text allows for more abstract thought, more of a separation between you and the physical world, more room for you and God to meet in the middle.
