It's a short and touching story about friendship, loneliness, and broken dreams during the Great Depression.
The two main characters, George and Lennie, are traveling in search of work and looking out for each other. Their dream of finding a place in this world, a place to call home, resonates deeply with other characters in the novel. Lennie, emotionally like a child but physically a grown man, doesn’t realize the limits of his strength or the harm it can cause. His love for petting soft things and his childlike, unformed sense of measure lead to tragic consequences.
The final scene near the pool of the Salinas River was heartbreaking. George, feeling responsible for Lennie, takes the action he thinks is best, but it leaves him with guilt and loss.
As for the language, I found it a bit difficult to read at times due to the phonetic spelling.

"Ain't many guys travel around together," he mused. "I don't know why. Maybe ever'body in the whole damn world is scared of each other."

They come, an’ they quit an’ go on; an’ every damn one of ’em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a God damn one of ’em ever gets it. Just like heaven.
