A man who's a boxer is attractive to both men and women, they want to be loved by him, or hit and hurt by him, possibly there's little difference, they only know they yearn for something.

Nothing so disturbs us as another's hatred for us. Our own secret hatreds, how natural they seem. How inevitable.

In this case the father interpreted the son's joke to mean: who in hell'd want to hurt me? I'm past hurting.
Or: who in hell'd want to hurt me? I can do that myself.
Or: who in hell'd want to hurt me? I'm shit.
