In the struggles of the pre-monarchial period the Hebrews fought on foot while their enemies were cavalrymen with chariots and were led by city kings, as is made clear by the oldest extant document, the Song of Deborah (Judges 5). It is also clear that the Hebrews regarded their victory as a triumph of a poor free people over aristocrats, who would have used their victory to exact tributes of grain and 'multicoloured clothing'. Compare the Swiss view of their struggles with the Austrian feudal knights.
