I was astonished when I was checking how many pages in the Russian translation of The Martian Chronicles and found there were 200 pages instead of 300 in the original. Maybe it depends on font size, but I don't think that is a 100-page difference.

In the story there are many mentions of canals on Mars. It comes from the 19th century, when Italian astronomer Schiaparelli wrote in his works that on Mars there are "canali." There are two opinions. "Canali," from Italian, means "channel," like in dried-up rivers. And some scientists by mistake correlated canali to canals. Canals are artificial waterways, which are made by someone. Who can be on Mars? Of course, Martians. And many fiction and fantasy writers picked up this topic, like Herbert Wells in his legendary The War of the Worlds, written in 1895.

The second opinion was that Schiaparelli saw canali, which was a light illusion.

Remarkably, that book was written in 1951; the history in the book began in 1999 and finished in October 2026. There is March of 2026, which comes after 1 month. It's cool!
