I enjoyed the overall atmosphere although I have no idea if it has any historical accuracy. The forensic stuff was cool - it was interesting to see how things could be done with limited resources and also to try and guess what some of the clues meant.
The mystery was a hit and miss. Some of it was really intriguing, while some of it not so much. There were moments where the MC was handed things on a silver platter or came up with ideas or found clues randomly, which I guess can happen, but reads rather meh in a book.
The main character was rather frustrating. He just doesn’t learn anything. The book is very repetitive with him being swindled by practically everyone he meets and/or him making dumb impulsive decisions - and there are zero lessons learned from it. This makes the book feel very drawn out and whole parts of it rather pointless.
Overall, I was interested enough to keep reading, but also had to make myself do so from time to time while groaning with frustration.397
