  Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!

  Удивительно, но спустя двести с лишним лет сюжет "Остров сокровищ" не утратил своей увлекательности для читателя, не потерял динамизма событий. Написано вкусно и интересно. Как кажется, в романе был собран тот самый набор ингредиентов — порой заимствованных у других — который сделал "Остров сокровищ" непреходящей классикой. Стивенсон:
  
  

  
  I am now upon a painful chapter, No doubt the parrot once belonged to Robinson Crusoe. No doubt the skeleton is conveyed from Poe. I think little of these, they are trifles and details; and no man can hope to have a monopoly of skeletons or make a corner in talking birds. The stockade, I am told, is from "Masterman Ready." It may be, I care not a iot. These useful writers had fulfilled the poet's saying: departing, they had left behind them "Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints that perhaps another--" and I was the other!

  Как это перекликается с Каверинскими "Двумя капитанами" и одолжениями из Теннисона: to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
  
  В лучших традициях викторианской эпохи, в этой книге "для мальчиков" женщин практически нет — вспоминается только мама Хокинса, но она второстепеннейший персонаж. Вообще же главным героем, понимаешь с годами, является Джон Сильвер: многомерный и сложный персонаж, которым Стивенсон по праву гордился. Сильверу хочется сочувствовать, а дело пиратов, кажется, не такое уж неправое: в конце концов, на каком основании клад должен был отойти Хокинсу, Ливси и дурачку Трелони? Кстати, изначальное название романа по задумке автора было "Sea Cook", что ещё раз подчёркивает центральную роль одноногого кока.
  
  Также стоит отметить, что Стивенсон достаточно точно передал ощущения золотого периода пиратства, в том числе регулярное пьянство флибустьеров, их расточительное отношение к припасам и выпивке и при этом наличие в буканьерской среде сильных демократических начал с выборами и перевыборами капитана и совещательным способом принятия решений. Впрочем об этом будет подробнее в обзоре на научпоп книгу о пиратстве.
  
  Ну а в конце самое удивительное и поразительное: где же находится тот самый остров сокровищ? Стереотипное воображение заносит его, конечно, в Карибский бассейн. Однако описание природы на острове говорит в пользу того, что он мог находиться только в Тихом океане, в районе Калифорнии. Те места Стивенсон посещал лично, в том числе с целью женитьбы на своей американской невесте. Далее цитата из вступительной статьи к роману за авторством профессора английской и американской литературы Джона Сили (John Seelye), опубликованной в серии Penguin Clothbound Classics:
  
  
  
  
  

  
  But where, exactly, is Treasure Island? I often direct this question to my students, who look at me as though I am asking them the location of the Brooklyn Bridge, the answer seems so obvious: it must be, once again, somewhere in the Caribbean. But then I call their attention to certain matters of flora and fauna, which inform the careful reader that Treasure Island cannot possibly be located in the Caribbean; instead, like the island made famous by the original of Robinson Crusoe, Alexander Selkirk (that half-crazy maroon who is the most likely model for Ben Gunn), it lies on the Pacific side of the American continent. The island is covered with live oaks, for one thing, and Jim hears the warning buzz of rattlesnakes, and live oaks and rattlesnakes are not native to the Caribbean. We hear of malarial swamps, not unusual in Caribbean islands, but hardly found in company with giant "pine-trees" and, most important of all, those even larger conifers, three of which provide prominent landmarks on the island and clues to the location of the treasure pit.
  We need to add to this the plain fact that Stevenson had never traveled to the Caribbean, apparently had no idea of the physical appearance of the islands there, and had perhaps in casual desperation substituted his memories of California. This was. after all intended to be a book for boy readers, who are not critical about such matters, like the nutmeg trees with which Stevenson also furnishes his island, which are found in the East not the West Indies.
