Girl in Translation
Jean Kwok
olvo223 января 2015 г.Kimberly - a main character of this book - what an amazing girl! I really admire her sense of purpose.
The idea of the book is simple - describe a difficult change in life for one small family - daughter (Kimberly) and her mother, who moved from Hong Kong to New York: their first steps, their failures and a path to success in the new country and culture. Who doesn't want to open one side of a curtain to look what it's hiding? And you have double interest if you are an immigrant yourself, as I am. How not to fail in the settlement process? How to adjust to new language and totally different style of living, especially in circumstances like Kimberly had - under her aunt's false kindness and protection, when she was forced to work illegally on aunt's plant to help her mother earn some money to be able to survive.
I am surprised how engaged I was in the book plot and how I didn't want to finish the book. Easy reading, but we'll worth time spent on it.238
