An Ideal Husband is an 1895 comedic stage play by Oscar Wilde which revolves around blackmail and political corruption. Wild witty mocks at emptiness and falseness of a secular society, petty-bourgeois Victorian morals. In the comedy the atmosphere of blackmail, intrigues, the gossips personified by adventurist Mrs. Chivli is reflected.
The internal shape of characters allows presenting a wrong side of social customs. We see loud titles and secular etiquette, grace of manner, shine of jewels, mind sharpness, singularity. But the ideal husband is not ideal because as Lady Markby said: Indeed, as a rule, everybody turns out to be somebody else.
In An Ideal Husband Wild addresses to a new theme -to disclosing of bribability and the dirty frauds reigning in political circles of England. Robert Chiltern, the gentleman, who is proud of spotless reputation, as it is found out, has constructed career by selling the state secret what made him extremely riche.
In its image Wild exposes corruption of the higher world. Characters of the play in a frankness impulse do England exposing a social system confession. Especially ridiculously in connection with these frankness the aspiration of heroes and in their person - all mighty of this world is seen to cover the real face with a mask of high morals.
The comedy is full of irony and sarcasm, and with irony characters speak not only about life, the politician and business, but also about relations and about themselves. So when Mrs. Chevely asked Lord Goring whether he was a bachelor, he answered that he believed so. Or for example: I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself.
On the whole Lord Goring is presented as a dandy, quite selfish but with self-deprecating humor. Due to his witty dialogues with his father we can see collision of two generations, a so-called problem of fathers and children: Youth isn’t an affectation. Youth is an art. So lord Goring disputably enough speaks about youth. Most likely, he is mistaken, he just wants to seem young to himself, and especially to the other people.
Despite ironic and frivolous relation to life, Arthur managed to rescue the friend from exposure.
One more interesting thing was also expressed by Lord Goring: And falsehoods the truths of other people. Here I agree this him because any person has his own truth.
This play was also easy to read, as The Importance Of Being Earnest, and in the same time it contains number of interesting ideas. The one I like more is the following: And self-sacrifice is a thing that should be put down by law. It is so demoralizing to the people for whom one sacrifices oneself. They always go to the bad. Sometimes in such cases people speak, don't do well - it will not be malicious.
Wild has transformed the comedy ending into the happy end which has been not deprived of sentimentality. But it doesn't weaken its satirical sounding, at least because convicted Chiltern as though in an award for "virtues" received a post of the minister.
"Sooner or later," Wilde notes, "we shall all have to pay for what we do." But he adds that, "No one should be entirely judged by their past."
