Arthur Clarke is one of the classical SF masters, along with Ray Bradbury, Clifford Simak, Robert Sheckley and Asimov, with whom I grew up during schoolyears and whom I continued to read afterwards in universaty and later.
Last week I was lucky to get to Clarke's house and working cabinet in Colombo, Sri Lanca, where he lived more than half century untill death in 2008.
This visit gave me impetus to reread Clarke's books, I loved so much. So it happened that Against the fall of night is the novel, with which I've started.
First it was written soon after the WW2, then several times expanded and later laid foundation for bestselling masterpiece The City and the Stars.
Despite being more than 70 years old, the novell still retains its grasp and appeal, prooving itself lingering classic. And even technology described in book, seemed to my eye not so unimpossible or obsolete. Against the fall of night embraces awesome stretches of time, as well as setting grand philosophical quest for the purpose and fate of humanity (in real Clarke's scale!). As many SF adventures, story seems rather superficial, sometimes naive and fairy-tale like. Still, it continues to impress me and I've experienced deep happy moments, encountering with the novel once more...
