  My 12 years of age are long gone, yet I found this book readable, atmospheric, and enjoyable. It may be not very strong on characterisation, still Maisie Hitchins comes out as highly likeable. She is positive without it getting stuck in your teeth, kind without being maudlin, and firm without being objectionably obstinate. Although she would definitely like to, she isn’t a great infallible detective (which would have been the author’s gross mistake). Maisie is very much in her place, her pieces of detection do seem to lie within her scope. While the way adults appear to be eminently tractable, not to say extremely obliging, may seem funny, any objections to the book fail to override the ultimate pleasure.
