Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad
Аноним21 ноября 2012 г.Unfortunately, my present level of English is not so well to fully distinguish the beauty and depth of the Conrad’s novel, that’s why I have an intention to reread it later using Russian translation. So I can rate this book now only with four stars.
First of all I think I should mentioned the subject of the story – the human ability to violence. Very interesting subject due to a later European constant struggle for humanity. How people from Europe really look alike in the late 19-th century, how they managed their colonies? How the natives were seen by the civilization’s eye? How the conquerors, natives were interact with each other and the nature? How all this events look alike for sensitive captain of the little steamboat?
The author invites us to a very cruel, unexplored dark world of the wild people both natives and Europeans which locates somewhere on the river in the middle of Belgian Congo. He invites us to perform a journey to the heart of that darkness which could unexpectedly be discovered inside the human’s heart (or mind).
But, as I said before, I think I had missed a lot of Conrad’s ideas so I should reread it again (the novel must be valuable otherwise Coppola didn’t shoot such an outstanding movie – Apocalypse now). Before that it wouldn’t be fair to judge the author and his story.
Second thing to talk about – the Conrad’s language. Very difficult to read. Partly because author used a lot of naval terms, partly because he used a rare adjectives, adverbs etc. I used to glance at the vocabulary at least one time per each page. So it wasn’t very comfortable reading.
The third thing – I don’t think that the telling a story through a captain Marlow was so brilliant idea. Perhaps it would be easy to perceive if it would be told in a form of the Marlow’s diary. Of course, it’s just the subjective opinion.
The fourth thing - I really don’t believe that the traders will admire the colleague who is more successful than them or at least will talk about this aloud. I spend several years in the “trading” sphere – people there behave themselves like a poisonous snakes and usually feel nothing to each other except hate or envy. Perhaps, Conrad just didn’t know that sort of people too well or it’s just the particularities of the English traders. Who knows?
It’s obviously an interesting book, informative and very well written.8406
