Empathy and guilt, embarrassment and jealousy were like a languauge I couldn't speak or understand. * I found that I loved being alone with my secrets almost more than anything. I loved being alone, period. Being alone was the only time I could truly be myself - and truly be free. I want friends. I want to connect. But I can't. It's like I'm starving, but food makes me sick. David's strong arms and steady countenance felt like what I'd always considered "home" to mean. I'd never been in a conventional relationship as an adult, and I'd never been the type of person who rushed into things. I liked privacy. Secrecy. Discipline. I prefered to keep people at arm's lenght, and keep my house immaculate sanctuary The truth was that I was better off alone. Not because I disliked people or companionship, but because I found it nearly impossible to prevent myself from becoming who they thought I was. * Being friendly is not something that comes naturally to me. I can pretend, but not for long because it makes me tired.
