If you opened it, you'd choose inferior wine compared to future wine. But if you never opened it, you'd be worse off than every alternative. Alice had answered that you were better off accepting satisfactory, not perfect, outcomes. Choose the best possible option was self-defeating. But the real lesson was that happiness was comparative. If you could outlast the other person - hold off even ten minutes longer - at least you wouldn't be the fool who drank the bad wine.
