In an arresting experiment, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley dragged a chocolate scent around a huge grassy field and had volunteers try to follow the trail as a bloodhound would, on their hands and knees and with their noses to the ground. Amazingly, about two-thirds of the volunteers were able to follow the scent with considerable accuracy. For five of fifteen smells tested, humans actually outperformed dogs.
