Are we to take this child's existence literally, or is she a psychological projection, a way of acknowledging the implications for the AfricanAmerican present of the unresolved past of slavery? Is the novel psychological realism, in other words, or a ghost story? Or is it, conversely, a more thought-provoking work if we don't decide?
