  But perhaps the most explicit textual moment of poststructuralism came in 1970 at the beginning of S/Z, Roland Barthes's anarchic, infinitely suggestive, and still unsurpassed close reading of Balzac's short story, ‘Sarrasine’. Apropos, apparently, of nothing in particular, S/Z begins, ‘There are said to be certain Buddhists whose ascetic practices enable them to see a whole landscape in a bean.’ .... Suddenly, the grand claims of structuralism appear absurd. Once you have found the single determining structure, there is nothing to choose between the universe and a bean.
