Had he wished, Joyce surely could have become another successful poetic figure after the mold of W. B. Yeats, Sean O'Casey, or J. M. Synge. But what already existed always repelled Joyce. At the end of Portrait, Stephen Dedalus leaves Ireland to be become in exile "the uncreated conscience of my race," just as in 1904 Joyce himself left Ireland, rejecting the models of Irish moral sentimentalism to go in quest of the consciousness of a still uninvented aesthetic.
