Oksident17 января 2017In 1933 he published Souvenirs of France, sixty pages (out of print ever since) of memory, praise, nostalgia and gratitude. There he recalls visiting an agricultural fair in the provinces and inspecting various appliances. ‘I asked an agent how long a certain manure-pump would last – marche being the word I used. The answer was illuminating. “If you leave it lying out in winters, as you English do, it will not marche more than two years. Give it shelter and it will marche for 10.” ’
