Napoli19 сентября 2016(...) question of what we might mean by "abnormal" or "pathological", a difficult subject on which only limited agreement exists. We might begin by asking: Do the people among whom possession trance occurs consider it "abnormal"? Do they say the person who experiences such a state is "crazy"? Do they say, "Something must be done about this so that he can go back to functioning like a normal person?" And just what does this "functioning" involve? The answer must be that in some societies, under some circumstances, it is considered a "bad thing" to go into possession trance and something must be done about it. In other places, going into possession trance is considered a fine and desirable thing. (...) the reader might ask, regardless of the view of the members in a particular society, what does the "objective observer" say? Isn't it possible that a highly trained and objective psychologist or psychiatrist, one who doesn't share the particular traditional beliefs, can make a judgement in psychiatric terms alone? After all, perhaps everyone in that society lives under certain delusions and misconceptions? And this question brings us to the even more difficult problem of reaching a culture-free definition of mental health.
