Completed in 1806, the Fourth Symphony was conceived at the end of an astonishingly productive period in Beethoven's career (1804-1806). The same important span of time in which he wrote the Fourth Piano Concerto, the "Appassionata" Sonata, and the three Razumovsky string quartets, it was a period of stylistic authority and perfection of the "symphonic ideal."
